Marble tile can add elegance to any home or commercial location, but how can you be sure that you are getting a high quality product? Are all marble tiles created equal?
If you are building a custom new home or redesigning a chic and contemporary commercial space, you want to be sure that you are using marble tile that is of the highest quality. Builders, distributors and designers alike want to be able to supply their clients with superior tile products that are both attractive and long lasting. While price is always a consideration, let’s face it; you get what you pay for when it comes to quality stone products. Even if two different vendors use the same name for marble tile, the quality can be quite different.
Big box home stores and some online retailers claim to sell “quality” marble tile at the lowest prices, but do you really know what you are getting from these types of places? Often what they are selling to you is not truly the product that you think you are getting.
Let’s first review the process of how a marble tile is made:
The blocks are then cut into raw slabs of different thickness: ranging from 1cm (tiles) to 3CM (countertops).
Raw slabs are then processed, cut and sorted into different colors, lots and/or grades.
Now imagine these raw slabs as slices of a chocolate swirl pound cake. The swirls will look different in each slice.
When it comes to marble, the background color, pattern, veins and fissures are like the swirls and each slab will be different. It is not unusual for a marble block to yield no more than 15% of premium grade material. The remaining 85% is typically sold to the large box stores and discount outlets.
Here are two groups of marble tiles that came from the same quarry and is solder under the same name. The one on the left is of premium grade and the one on the right is what is sold at a large tile outlet.
The tiles on the left also have a higher gloss index than the tiles on the right which means additional polishing steps were taken to achieve the vibrant shine. These are just a few of the facts that discount stores will not disclose to you. As you can see, not all marble tiles are the same.
